(Daylight) Saving Time: What is an Hour Worth?

clock on desk

This past weekend marked the semi-annual ritual of adjusting our clocks one hour, in this case to spring forward into Daylight Savings Time. Along with feelings of excitement over extended sunlight, the change sparked thoughts about the value and perception we place on time, along with the implications for our productivity, finances and health - and how SarNDipity Solutions can help.

While the impact of adjusting our clocks is commonly framed as a lost or gained hour of sleep, I more often associate it as a lost or gained hour of time awake. Like many who work a Monday-Friday work week, I typically don't have a set wake time on Sundays, so I sleep as long as desired and start my day whenever I happen to get up. (As someone who works in live TV, by contrast, my boyfriend has had the rare experience of witness time both advance and revert as it happens. He's said the regression of his shift back an hour each fall is especially tough - but I digress.)

In any case, I woke up this past Sunday with a familiar grogginess and feeling of being off-kilter that lasted into the afternoon. While these feelings were somewhat alleviated by my excitement over a delayed sunset, it didn't change the effect that one hour had on my energy level, mood, and overall functioning. The impact was palpable, reminding me that even small amounts of time gained or lost can add up.

We're all bound by the same hourly constraints within which to carry out our work, manage our households and care for ourselves and loved ones. Countless offerings, from meal delivery to dog walking to personal shopping, have emerged to help us do more within our fixed number of hours in the day.  Currently, we're seeing the massive proliferation of AI tools promising to save us hours each week and enhance our productivity tenfold - though I've often found the opposite true when I get lost in the depths of a simple prompt or query.

The Hidden Cost of Ongoing Delays

With so many priorities vying for our immediate attention, it's inevitable for items to fall off our to-do lists and never get revisited. Often, we see these tasks as non-urgent or non-critical - Think about the last time you streamlined your digital drives and files, assessed current technology use, or checked your website to ensure complete page and link functionality. Unfortunately, postponing this work indefinitely comes with a cost.

When you’re overwhelmed by disjointed processes, focused on the wrong priorities, and constantly postponing backend tasks, you’ll suffer from:

  • Wasted time
  • Unused tools and subscriptions
  • Suboptimal client experiences that could cost you business
  • No steady client pipeline—just the constant hustle
  • Lost revenue slipping through the cracks
